About Us

Our History

Discover how Kindred Family Services was formed by the coming together of two smaller organisations with kindred spirits.

For a number of years the Kia Tīmata Anō Women’s Refuge and the Helensville Women and Family Centre worked alongside each other in the field of social change in Auckland’s north west.

On 1 July 2020 the two became one and Kindred Family Services was created.

The formal merger followed many months of discussion and consultation around how the two agencies could work better together.

The merger was founded on the belief that we would achieve the following:

Enhanced Outcomes

By offering more services under one roof we remove the need for clients to repeat their story and are more likely to keep them engaged resulting in better outcomes and preventing possible future harm.

Our valued staff also benefit with more opportunities for professional development and career growth.

Sustainable Growth

We will have well-managed growth ensuring the best use of our resources and be better able to meet the needs of a growing population. The Rodney Local Board area increased 21% between 2013 and 2018*, but social services hadn’t kept pace with those new families.

Shared Strengths

Where Kia Tīmata Anō worked well in the crisis space, Helensville Women and Family Centre had strengths in the long-term support of high-needs clients. The merge will ensure continuity of care for all.

Reducing Family Harm

We work with people on a progression from Safety to Stability to Resilience and towards a Thriving Community. Our family harm team is expert in helping people live free from family violence, while our family support team helps reduce the stresses that can lead to family harm in the first place.

While our name is new, our people, our mahi and our commitment to the people of northwest Auckland and South Kaipara is long-standing and widely-recognised.
